How mind maps can help you get more value out of PKM
Do you capture nuggets of information you may use some day in a note-taking system? Are you frustrated by how hard it is to find them later? Here's a better way.
One of the biggest challenges faced by fans of personal knowledge management (PKM) is that their note-taking apps become choked with too many notes that they capture but never use again.
Their hope is that it will serve as a tool that helps them uncover fresh connections, insights and topics that power their writing. But more often than not, their carefully curated personal knowledge base turns into a dense thicket of knowledge and ideas that are hard to sift through and benefit from.
One potential solution, suggested by writer Ev Chaman, is to organize your personal knowledge base into “collections” - grouping notes thematically, by project or purpose to ensure you can find them when you need them.
But I think the key to making this approach work is to move away from linear note-taking tools and their inherent limitations. Instead, capturing and cultivating related ideas in mind maps may be a more flexible and effective solution.
